What is the Firewire Moonbeam?
The Firewire Moonbeam is a collaboration between pro surfer Rob Machado and Firewire. Rob help designed this LFT (see below) shape while thinking of an average smaller day in Southern California.
The Moonbeam’s similar nose template to the Firewire Midas. When Rob was asked why, he said,
“I gave the Moonbeam a nice and wide nose, like The Midas for skatiness in small waves.”
However, Machado loves surfing up and down in the pocket. So, in order to allow that on the Moonbeam, Rob raised the nose rocker above what you’d expect in a small wave design. This small enhancement created a board that could cut sharp angles without hanging up the nose.
Then Rob worked in the high tail rockers to cater to the fans of performance surfing. Doing this created board that is as responsive to quick direction changes as The Midas.
Though their are lots of similarities to the Midas, but the Firewire Moonbeam is designed to easily generate forward speed. It’s the board that works well on smaller waves where speed is harder to come by.
“The Moonbeam is meant to go fast and have fun” says Rob.
With the carefully crafted quad hybrid with crescent tail and a thruster option. This new interpretation of Machado’s Board-Eat-Board concave is meant to go faster and bring you many fun days on the water.
The Moonbeam is your best pick when looking for a board that is sure to enhance speed without losing responsiveness.
What is LFT?
- LFT or Linear Flex Technology, incorporates Firewire’s SPRINGER HD. It is a 0.75″ or 18 mm wide aerospace composite. This composite runs down the center-line of the board and plays a pivotal role in optimizing flex from nose to tail.
The Ecoboard Project
The moon beam is part of the Firewire Ecoboard project. Firewire, as a company, is committed to operating their business in the most sustainable way possible. Firewire is dedicated to “elevating the surfing experience through innovative design, new materials, and advanced construction methods.” To meet this goal, all Firewire boards and accessories are deisgned and built with two goals in mind:
- To improve the surfing experience as much as possible for those who ride their boards.
- To impact the environment as little as possible in all aspects of board design and manufacturing.
Not only do they hope to achieve these two goals but Firewire also hopes to support the global surf community by working wirh organizations like Surf Aid, Surfrider Foundation, Parley for the Oceans, Surfers against Sewage, Share the Stoke Foundation, and Save the Waves.
“If we don’t give back along the way, no matter our success in building our business, in our view that is diminished.” – Firewire
This mission has driven Firewire to consistently work on developing ess toxic methods manufacturing surfboards. The use an Entropy bio-resin and have adopted a zero-waste by 2020 goal. Firewire also upcycles their EPS foam waste to create durable garden pavers. Asa company, Firewire is always looking for ways to move even further into innovative sustainability practices.
