The June full moon is a minimoon. Opposite of a supermoon, a minimoon appears smaller than all moons since it is furthest from the Earth.
June’s moon will appear the lowest of the year.
The most common name for the June moon is the Strawberry moon because it is the time of the year that Native Americans harvested strawberries.
The June moon will also be a “minimoon” because it will appear as the smallest Moon of the year. This is because the moon will be it’s furthest from Earth. Minimoons and supermoons happen because the moon’s orbit isn’t perfectly circular. It is actually elliptical. Although the June moon is smaller, a minimoon is hard to detect. In fact, the size difference is only about 1/6th of a regular moon. (see image below). Making the minimoon even more difficult to notice is the fact that this moon will be the lowest rising of the year. Therefore, it will appear bigger since it is closer to the horizon. Although the full moon peaks on Friday, June 9th, it wil appear full from Thursday until Sunday.

According to Refinery 29, “This full moon will stoke your spontaneity, enthusiasm, and love of the outdoors — the days are getting longer and warmer, so the time for adventures is now. “
So, since the June moon is said to spark your spontaneity, why not try one of our full moon paddles. It is a fun, unforgettable adventure that continues to be one of our most popular events at Island Water Sports.
On our full moon paddle you will enjoy an evening paddle around Deerfield Island.
This month our June 9th paddle filled up quickly, so we added a second night to enjoy the moon on June 10th. Grab a friend and enjoy a paddle along our beautiful South Florida waterways. Watch the sun set and the moon rise with old and new friends. Enjoy the reasons we are so blessed to call South Florida home.
We will meet at 7pm at Island Water Sports where you will check in and then follow our expert instructors to our launch location. Our coaches will give you a quick lesson before helping you into the water and guiding you around Deerfield’s Famous Capone Island. It is a memorable experience to check off of your summer bucket list.
My name is Toni. I have lived in South Florida for most of my life and remember always looking forward to Island Water Sport's Midnight Madness. IWS has always been family. Growing up with a dad who loved to surf, I naturally loved the water. I have been blessed to work in the skateboarding industry while freelancing for magazines like Eastern Surf Magazine, The Paper, Juxtapose, Reggae Times, and Big Brother. Although I love to dabble in writing, marketing, and geeking out on the internet, my life's passion is investing in the lives of skateboarders and building skateparks around the world with my family.
