Get to know the family we know and love here at Island Water Sports.
Today, I was able to get a hold of the head of the Hager Crew. Aaron Hager, loving husband and supportive father of two boys, tells us about the family. Aaron and Angie are not your stereotypical parents…you’ll see them at the skate park, tattoos, snapbacks, black iced coffees jamming out to punk rock and having the time of their lives at all the skate contests. Their boys Roman and Rocco are both exuberant and amiable with a zeal for ramps and waves. Together, this family is the epitome of
Angie is the wife and mother of the Hager Crew. Both, candid and benevolent, Angie is definitely the type of person you want to be around or in their shoes. In other words, her shoes are always on point…so why not be like Angie for a day?!

Aaron Hager is the husband and father of the Hager Crew. Seemingly, reserved Aaron is truly an open book. With his intelligence, you’ll always learn something new in talking with him.
Known for: Digital Marketing
Roman Hager, the oldest of the boys is one of our IWS Skate Team Riders. Roman is the kid at the skatepark that will blow your mind with his tricks, wit, and heart.
Rocco Hager is the youngest of the Hager brothers. Rocco is outgoing, adventurous, and loves a good laugh. He’s a tough little guy with a clever sense of humor.
Interview with Aaron Hager:
Aaron, tell me more about yourself! Where did you grow up, siblings, pets…?!
I was born in Cocoa Beach, FL in 1973. [I] moved to Seattle in 1980. So, I grew up in Seattle, lived there through the entire grunge era…even saw Nirvana get booed out of a tiny club before anyone knew about them! I’m an only child so I was pretty spoiled even though we were just an average family. I’ve always had some kind of pet around, currently we have 2 dogs Jessy and Betty “roo-roo”.
Wait let’s back this up, grunge era? What was that like?
I used to hang out with this guy Sam that was buddies with Chris Cornell, so he would sometimes be around chillin’. It was a pretty fun -teen, 20s for sure.
Nice! How’d you end up in South Florida?
[I] moved back to Florida around 1992 when my Mom moved back. For a few years I would move back and forth from Seattle to Florida.
So, is that when you met Angie?
In 2001, I met my wife Angie. We moved in together a few weeks after meeting and have now been together for 16 years, married for 12.
How did you meet?
I decided to swing by my old work Outback in beautiful Palm Bay, FL. I hadn’t been there in months but something that night told me to stop by. I sat down at the bar and immediately was drawn to this girl server that I saw from across the room. I was truly mesmerized by her…One of my friends Tiffany came over and said “I’m so glad you are here, I know the perfect girl for you!” I looked over and pointed at Angie and said “Is it her?”. Tiffany said “YES, that’s Angie, I swear you guys will be perfect for each other.” Angie finally made her way to service bar…as she got closer I felt more and more energy and immediate emotions for this girl.
“I knew I was going to marry her that night. Two weeks later, we moved in together into a trailer in Barefoot Bay, FL and now here we are. I am a true story that love at first sight does exist.” – Aaaron Hager
You guys seem to have a wonderful balance between married life and having fun. What advice to you have for couples today?
Like the majority of long term relationships, Angie and I have had our struggles as much as anyone. Thankfully, we have always found a way to work it out and still be together. Marriage is a choice that 2 people make every single day. Some days it’s a really easy choice, others not so much.
There is no guarantee on next year or 5, 10, 30 years from now, all we can do is love the one we have chosen to be with and not give up just because it’s a hard day or week or month. Something most of us do over a long period of time is we love how someone used to be so much that we forget or have a hard time figuring out how to love who they are now. We all have to evolve and adapt our love to our partner’s evolution. If you don’t well, that is when a relationship will fall apart.

Tell me about the boys! Always fun to hear the parent’s perspective, something new!
Both the Hager Boys are pretty awesome in their own ways. Rocco was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at the age of 2 when we were living in Colorado. He nearly died twice within that first few months, it was really scary and hard but today he is fully controlled with no issues in years. Roman is and always has been a very unique kid. Old soul people like to say. Roman is a great big brother and is always watching out for Rocco.
Must have been pretty scary, glad he’s all good. So, when did you get into digital marketing?
I was always a computer guy. When I was 14 I worked for this place called Ballard Computer. Bill Gates used to come in all the time to buy stuff, back before Windows blew up. Kinda cool to think about now. In 2002, we moved to Orlando to go to Full Sail University. Initially, I was going for film but I didn’t like the way they were going to run the program so I switched to Digital Media were I excelled big time. Graduated in 2003 with all honors, Valedictorian, Course Director Award, Class President, 100% Attendance and an overall grade of 99.7%. For the last 5 1/2 years I have been working at Zimmerman Advertising in the retail Tech Department. I have been blessed with incredible support from Zimmerman through this fight.
Impressive! Digital marketing is where it’s at! Speaking of impressive, what’s it like to have a supportive family like yours? What are some values you guys hold high? Your boys are two of the most, sweet (and witty) kids I know.
We are a crazy family for sure, we try to raise these kids to be themselves and feel comfortable in any situation. Yes, we pay a bit of a price by letting them be pretty free but in the long run they will be better adults. While we let them be themselves in every way, we are very protective. We’re always with our boys, or at least one of us is when we can’t both be there. We keep the boys sweet because we tell them every day that we are proud of them, that we love them and that they are good kids. We cuddle on the couch. There is a lot of love and hugging in our house.
Awww, how it should be! How would you describe a typical day at the Hager house? Mornings before school, favorite house dish, skate time, bed time etc.
Typical Hager day isn’t that much different. We wake up tired and nobody wants to get out of bed. Finally, we get them up…give them some breakfast and get everything together to get off to school. Upon arrival home we check the homework situation which is typically the priority…depending on what time it is we go somewhere if possible. Ramp48 or the beach or whatever we have time for. I do most of the cooking when time allows, Roman and Angie love my Salmon. Rocco pretty much only eats chicken and veggies and what not. Lastly, it’s showers and the boys are in bed by 9:30 on school nights.
DM: One last message to the lady who runs the show with you?
