15 Years of Nike SB

In 2002, Nike launched the Nike Skateboarding brand – Nike SB. Although Nike had created a variety of skateboarding specific shoes in the past, this was the first time they had an “official” team of riders. One of the main team riders who helped launch Nike SB into the spotlight was Danny Supa.

Supa was the goofy-footed skater from New York City who was chosen as the first team-rider to have a signature colorway released. In March 2002, Supa’s New York Knicks inspired colorway of the Nike Dunk Low launched the new skatable version of the famous Nike basketball shoe.

To cater to skaters, it featured a substantially higher amount of cushioning than the traditional Nike Dunk utilizing the Zoom Air technology. It also featured padding around the collar and a stuffed tongue for extra cushion. It has since become one of the most celebrated and sought-after Dunk colorways ever.

“The Nike Dunk SB Low – Pro SB Danny Supa was the first true SB ever to be released. They were an instant hit, and were highly sought after by sneakerheads everywhere. Upon their release, they were only a glimpse into the revolution that would become Nike Dunk SB ‘s.” –

The Shoe’s Success

In a 2010 interview Danny discussed the shoe’s success:

48 Blocks: That’s definitely a blessing for sure. I actually hit Ebay the other day and I saw the Supa Dunk colorway going for $1,200. Do you trip off of that – that something that has your name attached to it is so rare and valuable.

Danny: Yeah, it’s pretty crazy. A lot of people, they just know my name from Nike, just from the Dunks. People that don’t skate are like “oh, I had your shoe.” I trip out whenever kids recognize my skating period, I think that’s cool. It’s pretty sick, but yeah all thanks to Nike.

Then during a Facebook Live conversation with The Ride Channel in 2016, the legendary skateboarder shared that he recently signed another two-year deal with the Swoosh as Nike had plans on rereleasing the famous SB Dunk during the Holiday season of 2017.

The Shoe

Be true—to your school colors, to your school of thought. That’s been the ethos driving the Nike Dunk since it launched in 1985. Back then, seven college basketball teams broke an unwritten rule and matched their Dunks to their uniforms. A riot of color ensued, and the Nike Dunk has been a symbol of individual expression ever since. Players, skaters and collectors picked up on the shoe and continue to influence it today.
