Get Up, Stand Up – Three Reasons YOU Should Start Paddleboarding
with guest blogger Viktoria Burgess
Have you ever wondered what to do to get an amazing overall body workout, relieve stress and enjoy amazing views all at the same time and avoid the stress that running puts on your knees? The answer is standup paddle boarding.
The sport of standup paddle boarding has grown significantly over the last few years. People who never could imagine being on the water are now able to get out there and enjoy their back yard, whether it be a lake, ocean or river.
If you ask me, there really aren’t any reasons one should not start paddle boarding. It just offers so much and the SUP community is amazing. You can go out for a causal stroll with your family and friends, go for a snorkel, put yourself through the grind by hammering away miles and miles for one of the best overall body workouts that you have ever had, catch waves, do yoga, or some people even go fishing off their board! The initial learning curve may take a few tries, however if you stick with it you will be rewarded in many ways.
In fact, paddle boarding (and surfing) is so good for your mental and physical well being, that some doctors (such as one in France) started prescribing it instead of medication.
Here are just a few of the many reasons you should jump on a board after you read this:
All around amazing workout and abs of steel!
- As far as physical health, SUP is an amazing overall body workout, endurance and strength wise. I would have to say you are probably using every muscle in your body at one point or another when you step on a board. Your feet and legs are working when you are balancing, your core is constantly engaged throughout the entire motion of the stroke and even when you are just simply standing and balancing on the board, and your arms and shoulders are constantly flexing to propel you throughout the water. It is very low impact so you can burn calories and avoid the stress that running puts on your knees. While you do have to be careful of your shoulders, you can control the intensity of your workout as you build your strength up. Honestly, I didn’t know what “lats” were before I started paddle boarding. I soon found out! This is just the strength portion, however the whole other aspect of SUP is the cardio and endurance portion. SUP can provide an amazing cardio workout. When you put more demand on your muscles, your heart rate goes up and in turn burns calories and gets you in amazing shape cardio wise. The cardio workouts are limitless, from doing short sprints, to long endurance paddles.
- Whenever I am aggravated or have had a long day at work, there’s just something about heading to the beach with my SUP and paddling that takes all the stress away. Sometimes I just paddle out slowly, look at the ocean around me, enjoy the sunset and breathe deeply. Other times, I paddle so hard I can’t tell if I’m wet from the water or sweat. Water is naturally soothing, the sounds, the way it feels, the way it looks…I have seen the most amazing sunrises and sunsets from my board and there truly isn’t a more peaceful way to start or end your day.
Connect with nature
- By having this beautiful sport that you will soon become hooked on, its not only great for you as an overall individual but it will allow you to connect with the ocean and all of its amazingness. You will get to see the beauty of the ocean from a perspective that you can’t get anywhere else. Sea turtles will swim up to you, manatees will look at you with their cute beady eyes and you will realize, as you spend more time on the water, the importance of helping to keep the ocean and our environment clean.
So, go ahead, I dare you…. start paddleboarding. You wont regret it, I promise.
