Greetings from Tampa (Pt. 2)

Day one has passed and we are already on to our second to last day at the Skatepark of Tampa’s 23rd Tampa Am. The year 2016 has been a crazy good one for our team riders and their accomplishments. We’ve followed Jamie on KOTR, Josh dropped his Thunder Trucks, Coastlines part, Pedro grabbed Thrasher’s attention in his Twoché part, all while Fabiana took women’s skateboarding to new levels with her contest performances. So far, this weekend the team has put it down and represented Island in ways we have not seen before. In case you missed the event or the SLS live stream we’re here to give you the inside scoop! We covered the open qualifiers, qualifiers, concrete jam…and everything in-between. Check it out!

Morning, where’s my coffee?

Woke up, got dressed and grabbed my coffee to get the day started. No long lines, no out of the way drives, or inconveniences. Commune + Co was on premise all day, all weekend. Fuel is key and SPoT was strapped with caffeine to help us to keep up with the fast paced day!

Friday’s open qualifiers was a full day for our team, just about everyone participated and gave it their all. Though some of our team riders did not qualify for Saturday’s qualifiers we did witness some of the craziest runs yet. Pedro Delfino took over our @iws_skate account to show us live snaps of it all. Jamie was automatically up for Saturday’s qualifiers and we were keen on seeing the turn out before the day even started.

Even if you needed to leave the pro course to get a snack from our buddy Sly…the event was broadcast there too. There were screens everywhere, it was virtually impossible to miss a single run! Talk about customer service SPoT!!!

Pause, someone call the medics!

Ironically, we missed the action when it came to the medics announcement. In the middle of the madness of Tampa Am  we went on and asked the man himself, Maurio McCoy.

“I was just hanging out on the one ledge on top of the quarter pipe and one of the homies boards shot out and popped off the coping and caught me a little above my mouth. I didn’t see it coming since I was just scrolling through Instagram…as soon as I knew it, blood was shooting out of my face! So when it was all said and done, I got five five stitches at an urgent care down the road, came back and skated one of the last heats. I qualified for semi-finals, so even though at first it seemed like a loss, it ended up working out well…and it gives me a sick story to talk about haha”

We love to hear that kind of come back story! You killed it this weekend. Your bravery was inspiring to us all. Keep on keeping on!!!

Indy Best Trick Contest

Shortly after we received the got the Sunday qualifiers list we were on to the Indy Best Trick Contest. This was wild. Bangers on bangers, you really couldn’t take your eyes off the course. One of the top Tampa Am moments for us was when Dakota Hunt’s best trick took us by surprise. Hunt came in hot blunt sliding the whole rail and finger flipping out. What in the world is gravity to this guy?! It was a tough call between all the talented skaters that participated.  At the end of the contest it looks like the South American powerhouse boys took the top 5 spots for the best trick. Congrats!

2. JP Olivera
3. Ivan Monterio
4. Yuri Facchini
5. Angelo Caro

Converse Concrete Jam

These guys really take the prize of keeping us on our toes. It was an hour of pure anxiety. Lots of speed, lots of air, boards flying everywhere, people crowding stands, hand stands, and so much more. Everyone was going insane over the back to back line up of heavy hitters. Jake Wooten demolished the Converse Concrete Jam and took home a nice stack of change with a bragging rights pass for 1st place. Oh and if you were wondering, Pedro is safe and sound….just look above. It seems Tampa Am brings out the best of the boys!
