YOUR ULTIMATE GUIDE TO ART BASEL MIAMI

Art Basel is the buzz of Miami this weekend. If you’ve heard of Art Basel a few things might come to mind. To some of us it could be the appreciation of art alone, to others it could be the lavish parties next to A-listers, and to many it’s all about the candid Instagram pictures behind murals. Whatever comes to mind, at least you have an idea of what’s expected. Whether you’ve been there or not, this guide breaks down some art show etiquette and attractions so you Basel like an expert!

Wynwood Neighborhood

Team Rider Fabi enjoys skating down Miami Ave last winter.

The intricate history behind the rise of Wynwood is just as interesting as everything it has to offer today. It went from a “springboard” neighborhood for immigrants to a well-developed Art and Fashion district. One can see a range of arts from street graffiti, to elaborate murals, to sidewalk doodles. Talking a walk instead of a car ride is the way to go. Keep your eyes peeled for the art galleries open to the public. They are just as interesting!

Art Manners, Matter

Basel or Basil?

Manners matter at any art gallery. Knowing the proper etiquette is key to having a good time and avoiding awkward situations. First off, make sure you pronounce Art Basel correctly. Say it with me, Art BAAAA-zuuuhll. To be fair, most of us can admit to saying Art Basil at least once! Just make sure you say it right around the art enthusiasts.

If you didn’t Snap, it still happened!

Careful when your extinct calls for Snapchat. Most exhibits ask you to keep in mind the artist before snapping photos. Make sure you approach the artist and introduce yourself before you ask to take a photo of their work.

Speaking of introductions, keep the business cards and self-promotion to a minimum. We know it’s prime time for that but make sure it’s not the only thing on your agenda. You’re here to appreciate art and celebrate the creativity of these artist. If you let it ride and stay true to yourself, the networking will flow naturally. Trust!

Check out Wynwood Walls. It’s a free exhibit and open all year around to the public. The only difference is there are always a few changes this time of the year. Be some of the first to admire the staple murals of Wynwood and air conditioned galleries. If you’re not pop cultured, just know that you would be standing in the same place as Beyoncé. Yes, it’s all very true. So, wear your best black ensemble and snap those photos! P.S: You can take photos here freely, this is that one exception! *Phew!*

Be sure to check out some action this weekend at the Infinity Plaza. Artist, Andrew Schoultz, combines his passion for art with skateboarding. Get the best of both worlds this weekend!  Who knows what you’ll see, these Florida locals are always ready with a bag of tricks to wow the crowd. Rumor is this spot might be open some time after Art Basel but don’t hold your breath on it! This is the one time to skate art without the cops hunting you down.

There’s tons to do! From grabbing a cocktail at one of the previous places you went for lunch or dinner to ending the night at a swanky afterparty! Be prepared for an impromptu night of dancing. Word on the street is Travis Scott’s concert was exquisite. We have yet to see more headliners like Kendrick Lamar and Martin Garrix later this weekend. One of our IWS brand ambassadors Brittany Carel will be out in Miami this weekend. Her nightlife picks are LIV, Red Spot, Story and Wood Tavern.
