DEERFIELD BEACH – Island Water Sports (www.islandwatersports.com) hopes to instill a passion for outdoor sports by giving Palm Beach and Broward County low-income kids of all ages the opportunity to learn how to surf, skate and wake board at the company’s free clinics and summer water sports camp that starts once school lets out.

The popular surf and skate shop hosted the 3rd Annual Island Water Sports Board Swap & Sample Sale Fundraiser from 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. on Saturday, May 17. The fundraiser was a chance for the community to clean out their closets and buy, sell, swap, or donate used boards (surf, skim, sup, and wakeboards), wetsuits, and accessories, and help fund the scholarship fund to summer camp so disadvantaged kids can attend.

Thanks to the outpour of support and donations from sponsors and community partners, Island Water Sports was able to raise over $5,000.  This allows over 15 children to attend the city of Deerfield Beach’s summer surf camp that would not normally be able to have the opportunity.

With special appearances by city Commissioner Joe Miller, Island Camps owner, Linsey Cottrell, and Ricco Luppino from Volcom, the camp’s major sponsor an estimated 600 people attended the fundraiser. Commissioner Miller was on hand to award the first two scholarships to the Deerfield Beach Surf Camp.  In attendance were also Gordon Vatch and Dave Gravelle from the Kiwanis Club of Deerfield Beach, the non-profit partner that will be issuing the camp scholarships.  In addition to the money raised the day of the event, Brita Schipner, owner of Ski Rixen USA, also made a generous donation of $1,200 in support of the scholarship fund.

Our community’s generosity will allow us to continue hold free clinics and provide camp scholarships to summer camps to children in-need that otherwise could not afford the experience,” said Linsey Cottrell, Island Water Sports. “Every dollar donated will help us share this experience and our love of action sports with the next generation.”

One in every six children lives below the poverty line in our community. Our vision is to offer camp scholarships to these children in need and to shine a ray of hope for their future through sports,” Cottrell said.
